<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Last week I picked up two new chickens! We got the ginger one on Tuesday. She is a three month old Buff Orpington and will grow to be big and fluffy.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The black and white one arrived on Thursday. She is a two month old, Silver Laced Wyandotte.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">At first they were weary of each other but the ginger one has established herself as the dominant one and they get along just fine, as you can see from the photos.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyAq1eK0C3gMD4pw_gK2shzFd0nWnqDPzm-wIyRdl4IqlCoiP9xdmFCPZ1a8OXhcrLEQL2XFMo6NM9MSRTXO61C90vZ3eEdiMOfL6w87MHEMuRHQErgX0aqX4fvU2wcKVgI4gW-os_z4yf/s1600/DSCF5949.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyAq1eK0C3gMD4pw_gK2shzFd0nWnqDPzm-wIyRdl4IqlCoiP9xdmFCPZ1a8OXhcrLEQL2XFMo6NM9MSRTXO61C90vZ3eEdiMOfL6w87MHEMuRHQErgX0aqX4fvU2wcKVgI4gW-os_z4yf/s320/DSCF5949.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Bellina is not so happy, though I think she is getting better. I separated the enclosure to keep her away from them but she pecks at them a bit through the fencing. I try to feed them next to each other, on different sides of the fence, and the new girls are let out to free range with her for about 30 minutes a day, so hopefully she will get used to them soon. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As you can probably tell, we have not named them yet. Even my step-daughter has had trouble with names for them - her first idea was to name them after herself! Anyone got any ideas on names?</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I have managed to do a bit of op shopping over the past couple of weeks. I really missed it last year. Being in class 8.30am - 4.30pm every weekday meant it was hard to get to my favourite op shops that are closed on the weekends. I have had irregular working hours these past few weeks and it has been great. Here some of my favourite finds.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Hs4lW3c7_fWQexla1ATaga8SBislIyak0XkOsQOweqmUoLCceJ0-9CpGXRtf7PXophAc3nSXxVbZbTAgO9o4UDqr9JT7Zv02nTqTHAC-NC3jgC8wMoQUHcPKahMHmF3Q26hYwF085h3X/s1600/DSCF5975.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Hs4lW3c7_fWQexla1ATaga8SBislIyak0XkOsQOweqmUoLCceJ0-9CpGXRtf7PXophAc3nSXxVbZbTAgO9o4UDqr9JT7Zv02nTqTHAC-NC3jgC8wMoQUHcPKahMHmF3Q26hYwF085h3X/s320/DSCF5975.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This coffee table is actually off Trademe, rather than op shopped. We have been thinking about getting one for a while and this one fits perfectly into our small lounge. I like it's under table storage. And the fact it only cost $4.50!</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHgXtgOGhbVdS_LxiwUBY_bPsSv11YKBE2wY_XI2TftoBGCiOg_YaWwX_7A81FW5MZmNw6VXaGnDRs9QQF0M0BlB7lbD2zCflpBVZf2D6BT0Izrp2IeEeneFZF14jCXh_9lAzvRTOUSUpc/s1600/DSCF5977.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHgXtgOGhbVdS_LxiwUBY_bPsSv11YKBE2wY_XI2TftoBGCiOg_YaWwX_7A81FW5MZmNw6VXaGnDRs9QQF0M0BlB7lbD2zCflpBVZf2D6BT0Izrp2IeEeneFZF14jCXh_9lAzvRTOUSUpc/s320/DSCF5977.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I really like these five drinking glasses, they were $2.50 for the lot. My step-daughter has made friends with some girls on our street. There are five of them in their gang. They have water fights, ride their bikes, chase poor Bellina around... When I saw these glasses I thought they would be perfect for them to drink out of when they are at our place.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I got three fashion books for half price - $2.50 all up. My Mother has the Yves Saint Laurent book and I loved looking at the pictures when I was younger. So even though I already have great book on YSL I bought this for nostalgic purposes. The Vogue book covers British Vogue for 60 years, from 1915 to 1975. It is really interesting and has some great photos, the majority are in black and white. I have not started reading the American Fashion yet but it looks interesting also.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieU_gWmW4DfeGrTZCqVMQKI4XDGtRbwhj_nBXW_v7O11vVGCbN5-zf4ZCQjdSiaEHma-h1OYTIbf4JRz8e1nACb962VnmrfF5KigJZGb-25mU-kvKLRygKIb-D6HR4WTMZn59lip1t59u4/s1600/DSCF5981.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieU_gWmW4DfeGrTZCqVMQKI4XDGtRbwhj_nBXW_v7O11vVGCbN5-zf4ZCQjdSiaEHma-h1OYTIbf4JRz8e1nACb962VnmrfF5KigJZGb-25mU-kvKLRygKIb-D6HR4WTMZn59lip1t59u4/s320/DSCF5981.JPG" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I found these dungarees for $4. They are super comfortable and have worn them many times a week since I got them. On the same day I also bought a pair of Nudie jeans for $2.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglIZH6M5oNHNjY6uFxj_AgfnflI8y9eeumpbEYuteRVhSHgthXpbcvcuGHsyMnH_jy-UtRus9oySZChQB7oPcBeZlcCCW-K4xqrsvwLsBfj7Dqr0WgGiciiX1tZE2cKNepuOBvmkFLCenD/s1600/DSCF5984.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglIZH6M5oNHNjY6uFxj_AgfnflI8y9eeumpbEYuteRVhSHgthXpbcvcuGHsyMnH_jy-UtRus9oySZChQB7oPcBeZlcCCW-K4xqrsvwLsBfj7Dqr0WgGiciiX1tZE2cKNepuOBvmkFLCenD/s320/DSCF5984.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And lastly, this jug. I can not remember how much I paid for this, but it was not much. It has a pretty scene with a man on horse back and lady being carried in a carriage. It sits nicely on our mantle and is currently holding flowers from the garden.</span></div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I know I am not the first one to be in admiration of Patti Smith, and I certainly will not be the last, but she is amazing.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">My wonderful Husband gave me her album <i>Horses </i>on vinyl and her autobiography <i>Just Kids</i> for Christmas. <i>Just Kids</i> is so captivating to read, it is hard put put it down. And Patti is just so cool. Not in a trying to be cool way but I am going to do my own thing and see if it works kind of cool. I really like how she can recall and describe what she wore at various moments in her life, the fact she loves books, how hard she worked (full time job during the day and writing poetry at night) to get where she got and her matter of fact approach to all the influential people she came into contact with (Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix...)</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">After all my cleanser and moisturiser experiments, I fallen in love with using oil as a cleanser and moisturiser. At first the thought of using an oil to cleanse my skin seemed a bit strange. After thinking about the like dissolves like theory I learnt in chemistry, it makes sense. Oil mixes with oil. Water does not mix with oil. Therefore, using oil to remove make up and impurities is simple chemistry.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
</span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm6HEW8S1WpUnVuwiXU_et82ooUYI9grn9M3uRPLnRm5U57o0yWmLiOeJALsFUHUAvVl8nUrQkrLBN3S9fG_YwdtpSWE6esoKhQDE4UpjSkYAPCmni5oeP0j8o8iXcJ94DDUUZalmnNOJA/s1600/DSCF5973.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm6HEW8S1WpUnVuwiXU_et82ooUYI9grn9M3uRPLnRm5U57o0yWmLiOeJALsFUHUAvVl8nUrQkrLBN3S9fG_YwdtpSWE6esoKhQDE4UpjSkYAPCmni5oeP0j8o8iXcJ94DDUUZalmnNOJA/s320/DSCF5973.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I need to refill my bottles soon</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It takes a while to get used to. After cleansing with oil your skin does not feel tight and refreshed that we have learnt to associate with cleanliness. It feels soft and supple. And it is clean.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Different oils, of course, have different properties. Castor oil is very viscous and is great at cleasning. It is also quite drying so it needs to mixed with another oil. Grapeseed oil is another 'dry' oil. It has a balancing effect on the skin.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Sweet almond and apricot kernel oil are both nourishing and good for normal to dry skin.</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHB2YkKm9oSqiX1Rx7kcLUHnsWpAWrACAtr0SjBj7tDMG1Vjx0tbpvbEnqHReC-toz9HnYgW75nZgxsmso8_BNliqq_yLups1C40K3e9p55BBpP0pL0SMfHkR1IUyZydibfP1NE1TnOpw6/s1600/DSCF5965.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHB2YkKm9oSqiX1Rx7kcLUHnsWpAWrACAtr0SjBj7tDMG1Vjx0tbpvbEnqHReC-toz9HnYgW75nZgxsmso8_BNliqq_yLups1C40K3e9p55BBpP0pL0SMfHkR1IUyZydibfP1NE1TnOpw6/s320/DSCF5965.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I do not have a before photo, but here is an after photo. (It is really hard to take photos of your face, especially with the older camera I have to use at the moment - our good one broke.)</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I have been using a mix of castor and sweet almond oil to cleanse my skin for well over a year now. I buy in bulk and mix it myself into smaller dropper bottles for easy dispensing. My skin has never felt better.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I use a small amount of jojoba oil after cleansing as a moisturiser. I add a few drops of palmarosa essential oil. It has a regenerative effect on the skin. As the weather is getting hot over summer and my skin gets oilier I will add some geranium essential oil as well. Geranium is balancing and is good for normal to oily skin types.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Yesterday was an eventful day. I graduated from my pattern making class. And Miss Sophina died.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">She had been unwell for a couple of days. I first thought she was going through her moult. Then on Monday she became uninterested in her food. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Trying to get in through the bathroom window</span></td></tr>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I had a short day at school on Tuesday and when I got home she had not moved from where I left her that morning. It was a hot day so I put a bowl of water under her head and she drank. A lot. I tried feeding her yoghurt but she was not interested. I carried her over to their favourite dust bathing area and lay with her reading a book for a bit. She spread out her wings and basked in the sun. Bellina joined us.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Yesterday afternoon when I got home from my graduation, I found her nestled in an old nesting place behind the hydrangea. Her head was away from me so I decided not to bother her with water. Later in the afternoon she was underneath the taro plants. I offered her water then but she was not interested. I put her back in their coop, snuggled in some straw and I knew it was only a matter of time. I checked on her every hour or so - probably more often - and somewhere between 8 and 8.30pm, she died. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I took her out of coop and wrapped her in brown paper as I could not find a suitable box. My Husband dug a hole in our garden when got home from work around 9pm and we buried her. On top we planted a small olive tree we had been given a few weeks ago and were still deciding where to put. This seemed like the perfect spot.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It was an awfully sad evening.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Sophina was a pretty crazy hen. She would disappear for hours on adventures around our neighbourhood. Sometimes she would go for so long, even missing dinner. I worried something untoward had happened to her but she would always return in time for bed. She was not so keen on cuddles and was always weary of children. She laid an egg for us almost everyday for the nine months we had her. If I could have given her a break I would have. We are very thankful for the eggs she supplied us with. I like to think she had a good, happy life. Even if it was short.</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Sophina, on the right, enjoying her yoghurt with Bellina just a few days ago.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Bellina is sad. Yesterday she would not leave their enclosure, even though the gate was open for her. She hung around the area Sophina was nestled making soft clucking noises. This morning she woke us early, calling out. Bellina has never been vocal, it was always Sophina who made the noise. I have left the gate to their pen open all day today and she has been hanging around our house, by the bedroom and bathroom windows. I know she is lonely and I try to give her as much company as possible. She just misses her friend. As we do too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">On Friday evening I went to see the Royal New Zealand Ballet's production of </span><i style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Giselle</i><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">, featuring the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>Giselle </i>is a love story. </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">It was first performed in Paris on 28 June 1841.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">A story about a young village girl who is wooed by a Duke in disguise as a peasant. The gamekeeper is in love with Giselle and he fights for her attention. In time, the Duke's true identity is revealed to Giselle, as is the fact he is engaged to a Princess. Giselle is devastated and takes her life with the Duke's sword, thus becoming a </span><i style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Wili</i><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> (</span><i style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Wilis</i><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">, according to legend, were the ghosts of engaged girls who died before their wedding day).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://haglundsheel.typepad.com/.a/6a0105359b23bb970c017c32022932970b-500wi" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://haglundsheel.typepad.com/.a/6a0105359b23bb970c017c32022932970b-500wi" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The gamekeeper is in the wood mourning the death of Giselle when the <i>Wilis </i>rise and drive him into the nearby lake. Giselle who has been accepted into the group wards off the <i>Wilis </i>when they try to do the same to the Duke. The <i>Wili </i>Queen however, decrees that the Duke must be made dance until his death. The Duke begins to dance, inspired and supported by Giselle's love. He manages to dance until day break when the <i>Wilis </i>must retreat. He collapses with exhaustion and Giselle sinks back into her grave. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://lucire.com/2012/0926i1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://lucire.com/2012/0926i1.jpg" width="226" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The Royal New Zealand Ballet's production of Giselle was so captivating. The 110 minutes flew by, I did not want it to end. It was beautiful, moving and even, at times, funny. I do not think I have ever enjoyed a ballet as much as this.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The costumes were, as always, gorgeous. The <i>Wili </i>gowns were flowing and ethereal, moving beautifully with the dancers.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I am waiting in much anticipation for Swan Lake in August next year, when the company celebrates 60 years.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Some music for your Friday. Dirty Three are an Australian trio that my Husband introduced me to when he bought home their album <i>Ocean Songs</i> a few months ago. It is a purely instrumental album that invokes many emotions as you listen to it. It can slow and haunting or strangely uplifting. I like to listen them late in the evening when sewing or drawing, when doing housework, or when out in the garden. It was hard to choose just one track but I do enjoy this one the did with Nick Cave.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I made another batch of soap last week. This time around I used coconut, olive and palm oils, all organic. It is unscented as that is how I like it. The orangey colour you can see on some of the bars is dye from the moulds. I popped a few bars out earlier and they did not colour. I left the others for a couple more days and this is how they look. Nothing too serious, though I shall remember for next time.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The first is <i>Culinary, Fragrant and Medicinal Herbs</i> by June Morgan (no publishing date). It contains a fairly comprehensive list of herbs grown in New Zealand and their uses. It also has a few recipes ointments, creams and the like; and herbs for dyeing wool.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The second book is <i>Household Ecology</i>, published by Canterbury Environment Centre (Inc.) in 1978. The front page states 'Practical hints about how you can help preserve New Zealand's natural environment, conserve valuable resources, minimise waste and save money as well.' Still sounds very relevant for today, if not more so.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It covers everything from cleaning and washing to food buying, energy use to water and air pollution.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I like to think I already practice a lot of the things mentioned in this booklet, and if not, I am aware that it should be done (like not turning on the oven for one thing, try to make dinner and bake at the same time, while the oven is still hot). </span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">It is November. The garden is coming to life. I am trying a new approach this season. It goes something like this. Plant every space possible with flowers and vegetables, all mixed together. Add worm juice on occasion. Let them grow. I have considered final size to a certain extent, and staked the necessary plants, but I am hoping to let nature do the rest.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I think Bellina has come to the end of her laying life. A month or so ago I found a weird thing their nest, laid by her. After a bit of google research I have concluded it was called a lash. Google it yourself, if you would like to know more. Be prepared for some unpleasant pictures though. We have no intentions of getting rid of Bellina, even though she will not lay anymore. She has such a beautiful personality and is wonderfully cuddly.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I made the dress a couple of weekends ago. Because of the weight of the fabric I needed a very simple pattern without too many seams to eliminate bulk. I found this pattern, Simplicity 5508, at a thrift store in Los Angles. I lined it with calico, rather than using facings, to prevent it scratching. I really like the silhouette of this dress but the jewel neckline takes a bit of getting used to.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I have been wearing it with long sleeved tops and stockings to deal with the cold. I got my Father, who was staying with us for a few days, to take a couple of photos of me before school last week. I am wearing it with my new <a href="http://franklysew.blogspot.co.nz/2012/05/blue-jacket.html" target="_blank">blue jacket</a> and a merino top that I made recently. The merino top is a bit odd fitting. It goes well under things for warmth but I doubt I will wear it on its own - not out of the house at least. </span></div>Frankiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02503620346716533822noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-592426722845980587.post-3785709462475225962012-06-05T12:32:00.000+12:002012-06-05T12:32:00.159+12:00Black velvet trousers<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

I had never sewn with velvet before so I thought class time would be the perfect opportunity to try, the only issue being we are not allowed to use pins in class. We have essentially been trained to be factory machinists in my course. I took my time and did okay. There are a few seams where the velvet slipped and the seam allowance is a bit wonky but you can not notice from the outside.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">I have to say I am quite proud of my jacket. I top stitched all the seams, something I have picked up on at my work experience. It keeps the seam allowances open, especially useful on thicker fabrics and finishes it off nicely.</span></div>

This jacket needs button holes down the front and on the pocket flaps, but I am putting it off. I think I works okay without them for now.</span></div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The patch pockets caused a bit of frustration. If making it again I would bag out the pockets then sew them on rather than dealing with folding under seam allowances, especially with thicker fabric. Other than that it was very quick and easy to sew. The pattern did not call for a lining so I did not put one in, though I am still not convinced this is a good idea. The pocket flaps are lined with some silk they had at school. I still may go back and line the entire jacket. I think it will finish it off nicely.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I made a pair of shorts. Actually, I made two pairs of shorts but I only photographed these red linen ones. The other pair are exactly the same pattern, just made from black cotton. The pattern is Vogue 8300, the same as my </span><a href="http://franklysew.blogspot.co.nz/2011/12/blue-and-white-striped-skirt.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">blue and white striped skirt</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">.</span><br />

Pretty successful if I do say so myself. It tastes good too.</span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Perhaps the most exciting thing to happen is this.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We have chickens! We were given them from our nieghbour. They had two hens, then bought these two. These girls turned out to be very dominant and they would pick on the original two. He had to keep them in a cage for most of the time and they started pecking each other which is why they have lost feathers around their necks. When he found out we were about to buy some hens he offered them to us! They were called Tom and Jerry - unusual names for girls - but my step-daughter has re-named them Bellina and Sophina. I do not think they mind the name change too much.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Bellina is slight larger with a floppy comb and a broken beak. She is also the dominant one. Sophina is smaller with an upright comb and is a bit more hesitant around people. She is very adventurous with food though and will always be the first to try something. Then Bellina comes over and pushes her out of the way.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">They roam our back yard during the day, eating all my silverbeet. Then they put themselves to bed at night and I lock them away. They are currently giving us one to two eggs each day.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I hope my blogging returns to a more regular rhythm, not making any promises though. My work experience for school is starting next week which means a lot more things to blog about, but also perhaps, less time to do such things. We shall see.</span></div>
